Broadcasting & Telecommunications

The rapid pace of change in the business environment continues to impact the broadcasting and telecommunications industries. Innovation in technology is propelling trends in Internet, IP, including voice over internet protocol, mobility and a feature-rich environment. Parallel to this, competition is driving another set of trends: globalization and pressures on price and margins.

Cross-platform competition is blending the entire sector as the Internet, wireline and wireless carriers, cable, over-the-air broadcasters and satellite operations all strive to deliver complete suites of bundled services to consumers. The regulatory landscape is quickly changing as the power of the Internet, forbearance and the availability of unlicensed spectrum combine to shift the focus of regulators. Once the surrogate for competition, regulators now must facilitate and equitably manage competition even as they address critical issues as diverse as:

  • Access to services, particularly high-speed internet service, in rural and remote communities
  • Protection and funding of Canadian arts and culture
  • Grey markets, piracy and the protection of intellectual property
  • Information technology penetration and applications, and as a driver of economic productivity and gain
  • Network security, privacy, spam, computer crimes and quasi-criminal activities, wiretapping and lawful access to all forms of information

Global’s Broadcasting and Telecommunications practice have served national and regional telecommunications companies, broadcasters and tv and film producers among others.
